Performance: Luminous Bach

From Wednesday, June 16th, 2021 at 1:00 pm until Friday, June 18th, 2021 at 8:30 pm

Join us for “Luminous Bach” – selected works for organ played by Professor Rod Thomson on the organ of St David’s Cathedral. These recital are free to attend and there is no need to register in advance. All welcome. You are welcome to sit in the body of the Cathedral to listen or for the full experience, we recommend coming up to sit in the choir stalls in the Chancel (just beyond the Rood Screen). Cathedral staff will be happy to direct you.

Service: A Service of the Light and Evening Prayer

From Wednesday to Saturday evening this week at 5:30pm please join us for a Service of the Light and Evening Prayer. As we gather around our Lord’s word, we will be reminded that Jesus Christ is the light of the world, a light no darkness can extinguish. In our prayers we will pray especially for the city of Hobart. You are welcome to light a candle as a symbol of your own private prayer in the Hope Chapel at the foot of the cross.

Festival: God is Light, 16-20 June

From Wednesday 16th June until Sunday 20th June the Cathedral will be opening late each evening and we invite you to step inside and come into the Light.

The centrepiece of our festival is an art installation by Tasmanian artist Marianne (Maz) Gill-Harper called “The Big Picture: Creation to the New Creation.” The Cross of Jesus Christ is the central focus of this installation which will hang from the rood screen of the Cathedral.

  • 6pm Screening of “For the Love of God: How the Church is Better and Worse Than You Ever Imagined” followed by a short discussion
  • 7pm A reading of the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St Mark
  • 8pm Open rehearsal: the Cathedral Choir

  • 5:30pm A Service of the Light (30mins) – Chancel
  • 6pm Screening of “For the Love of God: How the Church is Better and Worse Than You Ever Imagined” followed by a short discussion

God is Light: The Passion Readings

From Wednesday, June 16th, 2021 at 7:00 pm until Sunday, June 20th, 2021 at 7:30 pm

Each evening during our festival “God is Light” we will read aloud the story of the trial and crucifixion of Christ, known as the Passion Readings.

We will take each of the Gospel accounts of the Passion in turn, in the order that they appear in the Bible.

Wednesday 16th June 7pm: The Passion according to St Matthew

Thursday 17th June 7pm: The Passion according to St Mark

Friday 18th June 7pm: The Passion according to St Luke

Saturday 19th June 7pm: The Passion according to St John

On Sunday, when we remember Christ’s resurrection, we will read the account of the resurrection from St John’s Gospel.

Sunday 20th June 7pm: The Resurrection of Jesus Christ according to St John.

All welcome. Bookings are not required.

Service: Opening of Parliament Service June 22, 9.30am

Tuesday, June 22nd, 2021 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am

A service for the opening of the 50th Tasmanian Parliament.  A chance to gather with our politicians in prayer for wisdom as they lead our state.  Bishop Richard Condie will speak and the Dean will lead along with various Church leaders.
