Concert: “Great Scott” Shore Preparatory School Choir

Saturday, August 4th, 2018 from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm

A multi-media musical performance by the boy’s choir of The Shore School, Sydney. Directed by David Jensen, based on the story of explorer Sir Robert Scott’s ill-fated Antarctic expedition to the South Pole.
The 41-strong choir will perform at St David’s Cathedral, Hobart at 2pm and 6:30pm on Saturday 4 August. Free entry. Part or Australian Antarctic Festival

‘Great Scott’ has been performed a number of times over the years. Its most notable performances were in 1998 in the Great Hall of Parliament House in Canberra and in Plymouth Cathedral UK in 2012 to commemorate the centenary of Scott’s death.
Co writer David Burke approached Davd Jensen, then at the Kings School, Parammatta, to compose the piece.  Frank Debenham, an old boy of The King’s School and famous scientist from Cambridge University, had accompanied Scott to Antarctica and was a member of the search party that had discovered and buried the bodies.
‘Onward Christian Soldiers’ was Scott’s favourite hymn and was sung at the burial service conducted on the Ross Ice Shelf in 1912. and the hymn reoccurs throughout and ties the piece together.

In  writing ‘Great Scott’ there was determination that the piece should be an uplifting experience despite the failures of the expedition. Scott and his companions displayed enormous courage during their ordeal and thes qualities are shown in the songs.

Bravery, courage ,valour and sacrifice can be in short supply and so this piece is a wonderful teaching tool and resource for this generation of school children.
