Before Good Friday there is Maundy Thursday where we remember the Last Supper, Jesus giving the new Law that we love one another as he loved us, and demonstrated this in washing the feet of his disciples.

The Dean of Hobart, Richard Humphrey will be the preacher on Good Friday and Easter Day.
The Deans writes “A Cross Culture” uses indigenous artist, Yvonne Edward’s “Three Crosses” , which is part of the Our Mob, God’s Story book, released as part of the Bible Society 200. I approached Christobel Mattingley, editor of the book, respected author, former Hobart resident and owner of the copyright on this work for permission for its use which she was happy to give. She wrote
It was wonderful to learn that you had arranged the exhibition of prints from the book in the Cathedral at such a busy time for tourists, and that you wish to use Yvonne Edwards’ Three Crosses as part of your Easter material. Yvonne painted it for me some years ago when I asked her to do a painting for our church, also St David’s, here in Adelaide, where it hangs permanently now. …
She was a person of deep faith, and like many Aboriginal people, died too young – at 62. She wanted to tell her own story and had asked me to help her, but with a succession of tragedies in her life she felt unable to begin. After her sudden death in 2012 I had to wait 2 years before her name could be mentioned and I could begin work on her story. Maralinga’s Long Shadow: Yvonne’s Story, published by Allen & Unwin last year, features many of her paintings and was shortlisted for the Christian Book of the Year and Commended in the Educational Publishers Award. It tells of the four generations of her family – father, sister, husband, and two sons who all died of cancer and two grandchildren born with major birth defects – all affected by the British atomic tests on their traditional country. It also tells of the 20 year quest she and her husband pursued to find their firstborn son who was taken away from them at birth. It is very moving to know that a painting from this spiritual Anangu woman from far west South Australia is now being seen and used in Hobart’s Anglican Cathedral. I have shared the news with her family, who live in the community of Yalata, 200 kms beyond Ceduna on SA’s Far West Coast.
Yvonne painted this work as a response to the idea of Reconciliation. I hope you will join me in praying that this wonderful artwork will help us think about A Cross Culture which is marked by Welcome, Reconciliation and Sanctuary.
Service: Field of Remembrance Service 2017
On Monday 24 April 2017 at 11am, the 22nd Annual Dedication Service will be held under the auspices of the War Widow’s Guild of Australia Tasmanian Branch Inc and Partners of Veterans Association for a Field of Remembrance.
This will be a major emotional event attended by the Governor of Tasmania, Her Excellency Professor the Honorable Kate Warner AM. The Rev’d Ruth Hanlon will be the speaker.
