Service: Opening of the Legal Year Service 2017

The Traditional Ecumenical Service that start to the Legal Year.  This years guest, Professor Tim McCormack, will be speaking on “Renewing our Commitment to Justice.”

Professor Tim McCormack
Tim McCormack is a Professor of Law at the Melbourne Law School and an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Tasmania Law School. He is also the Special Adviser on International Humanitarian Law to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague and a Director of World Vision Australia. Tim has recently returned from a sabbatical year in the US where he was a Fulbright Senior Scholar, the Charles H Stockton Distinguished Scholar-in-Residence at the Stockton Centre for the Study of International Law at the US Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island and James Barr Ames Visiting Professor at Harvard Law School for the Winter Term (January 2016).
Tim was the Foundation Australian Red Cross Professor of International Humanitarian Law (1996-2010) at the Melbourne Law School and also the Foundation Director of the Asia Pacific Centre for Military Law (2001-2010) – a collaborative initiative (established 2001) between the Melbourne Law School and The Australian Defence Force Legal Service. He has held a number of significant international appointments as: an international observer for Phase 2 of the Turkel Commission of Enquiry into Israel’s processes for investigation of alleged violations of International Humanitarian Law (Jerusalem, 2011-2013); amicus curiae on international law matters to the judges of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia for the trial of Slobodan Miloševic (The Hague, 2002-2006); expert International Humanitarian Law adviser to Major Mori for the defence of David Hicks before the US Military Commission (Guantanamo Bay, 2003-2207). Tim is also a member of the international advisory boards of a number of academic institutions in the US, Israel, Germany and Sweden.
Tim grew up in Burnie and attended Burnie State School, Parklands High School and Hellyer College. He is a graduate of the University of Tasmania (LL.B. Hons. – 1982) and of Monash University (Ph.D. – 1990).



Blooming Bells Open Day

Saturday, February 11th, 2017 from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm

As part of Blooming Church the Cathedral ringers will be running three comprehensive tours of the Bell Tower on Saturday morning.

These will begin at:
10.00,  11.30,  12.15
The comprehensive tours include a visit to the ringing room where we will provide an introduction to bellringing (a bit of background, how they work and so on), a demonstration of bellringing by the band, and an opportunity to have a go.

It also includes a visit to the top of the tower, with a glimpse at the bells in the belfry – possibly while they are in motion, and a little time to look at the views from the tower roof.  There is a limit of 15 people per tour.

On Saturday afternoon we will be running six tower-only tours, climbing to the roof to see the views and with a glimpse at the bells in the belfry en route. These will begin at:
1.00, 1.30, 2.00, 2.30, 3.00, 3.30.

Come along you will find it a-peal-ing.

Service: Ordination & Collation.

There is an ordination service at the Cathedral for the priesting of The Rev’ds Ruth Hanlon, Jennifer Hercott and Sue Willis.

The Venerable Helen Phillips and Stephen Carnaby will also be collated as Archdeacons.

Bishop Richard Condie will lead and preach at the service.

Service: St. David’s Bicentennial Service

Sunday, February 19th, 2017 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am

Original St. David's New TowerOn Wednesday, February 19, 1817 at 11am the Foundation Stone of the first St. David’s Church was laid at the corner of Macquarie and Murray Sts.

To celebrate this our service on Sunday February 19, 2017, at 10am will as far as is practical be as Church could have been in 1817 with the Book of Common Prayer, King James Bible, and Communion Vessels that were in use at the time. We also have the text of the sermon that  Reverend Robert Knopwood wrote for the occasion.

Service: Evening Prayer not Evensong

Sunday, February 26th, 2017 from 5:30 pm to 6:00 pm

We will have Evening Prayer this Sunday rather than Choral Evensong due Choral Eucharist on Ash Wednesday later in the week.

Due to Choir engagement with Sanctuary as part of 10 Days on the Island please check closer to the time if Evensong is on in March.
