Eternal God, you are the source of all life and love,
You give us the skill to enhance our lives
through the roads that connect us and the vehicles that carry us.
We thank you for all that these gifts represent.
But we confess that we are wounded
by them through our own impatience, recklessness and speed.
Lord have mercy
In 1999 the bell ringers learnt of the availability of a 1-tonne bell in the key of E that had come from a church in England that was a perfect fit for the eight bells at St. David’s This was the seed of the project to augment the cathedral’s bells, requiring four new bells and significant structural work in the tower. To kick-start the project the tower captain Doug Nichols bought the 1-tonne bell and donated it to
St. David’s. A lot of planning and design work took place between 1999 and 2002 and in February 2002 the project went public and fundraising began. Within three years over $120,000 was raised. The three additional bells were also donated (two by Jennifer Murphy of Melbourne, and one by local ringer Jane Keble-Williams and her father Gwilym).
All the bells were cast, fitted out and delivered to the Cathedral. A permanent lifting beam structure was installed in the tower. The components had to be hoisted into the tower through the louvre windows, using a crane positioned in Macquarie Street. Then, over a six week period in April/May 2005 the bells and old frame were removed from the tower, and put on public display in the cloister. The new frame was built and installed in the tower, the bells were lifted back into their new positions and the fittings put back onto the bells to allow them to be rung.
The first ringing took place on 15th May 2005, with the ringing room crowded with ringers, family members and major donors, including Jennifer Murphy, without whose considerable gift we would not have been able to proceed at all. Ten years later there is no doubt the project was a success. The cathedral is the owner of one of Australia’s finest rings of bells.
You are invited to come and see the cathedral bellringers in action on Sat 16 May between 10am and 2pm.
