Lent fills the time between Transfiguration and Good Friday
On the mountain there is glory, on the hill there is shame.
On the mountain there is dazzling light, on the hill there is deep darkness.
On the mountain Jesus clothes shine, on the hill he is stripped naked.
On the mountain Jesus is there with his friends, on the hill he is abandoned.
On the mountain Jesus has on his left and right Moses and Elijah, on the hill is it is unknown criminals.
On the mountain he is praised, on the hill he is mocked.
On the mountain the voice of the Lord says “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”, on the hill Jesus cries “My God My God why have you forsaken me.”
In seeing the difference between the mountain and the hill we see the path of self denial that Jesus calls us to. The Father says we are to listen to the Son who calls us to join him in his cross carrying journey.
